Overview: Why ESG

The climate crisis is now a tangible existential threat to the planet as well as to humanity. Putting words into action to attain UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is as critical as ever. This includes actions in the economic sphere of activities, where the private sector plays a major role. As neoliberal capitalism’s excessive focus on company and shareholders profits is increasingly identified as a major driver behind environmental destruction as well as a host of social and economic inequality issues, today’s business leaders are evaluated not only on their ability to create profitable outcomes, but to do so while simultaneously delivering real, tangible value for the other stakeholders, including customers, employees, partners, society and ultimately the planet. Corporations are now pressed to answer to a more diverse group of stakeholders as a matter of global interest, and various types of ESG (Environment, Social, and Governance) evaluation…

The Value Research Center was officially established at Doshisha University in Kyoto Japan in November 2021. The purpose of this research center is to research and develop a system for measuring, monitoring, assessing and reporting on value creation and destruction impacts that organizations make on various stakeholder groups including (1) the organization itself, as well as its (2) shareholders or owners, (3) customers, (4) employees, (5) partners, the (6) society within which it operates and (7) the planet.
