Overview: Why ESG

The climate crisis is now a tangible existential threat to the planet as well as to humanity. Putting words into action to attain UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is as critical as ever. This includes actions in the economic sphere of activities, where the private sector plays a major role. As neoliberal capitalism’s excessive focus on company and shareholders profits is increasingly identified as a major driver behind environmental destruction as well as a host of social and economic inequality issues, today’s business leaders are evaluated not only on their ability to create profitable outcomes, but to do so while simultaneously delivering real, tangible value for the other stakeholders, including customers, employees, partners, society and ultimately the planet. Corporations are now pressed to answer to a more diverse group of stakeholders as a matter of global interest, and various types of ESG (Environment, Social, and Governance) evaluation are there to assist in their efforts to achieve sustainablegrowth.

The 2022 GIVS symposium is focused on the current and future challenges that lie ahead for businesses as ESG evaluation becomes an integral to assessing the value of companies. The symposium showcases the Value Research Center’s Value Model as a potentially powerful alternative to the currently available ESG evaluation systems like MSCI, Bloomberg and FTSE4Good, with a new framework for measuring, managing and creating value for diverse group of stakeholders not yet found in existing ones.
